The roads we erect and the cars we drive maximize our comfort and efficiency, but at what cost? As You Pass By commences an exploration of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, an infamous highway in New York City that slices through the two named boroughs. We pause in Woodside, Queens to observe one of the many spaces that have been sacrificed in order to create and maintain the utopian image of New York City on the opposite side of the East River. What we see is the beautiful way in which one New York citizen activates a seemingly derelict stretch of land.
Georg Anthony Svatek is a filmmaker with a focus on documentary and experimental cinema. Currently, Anthony freelances as an associate producer and shooter on BBC World's Talking Movies. Born and raised in Austria, Anthony now lives in Brooklyn, NY.
Amanda Katz uses film, photography and sound to explore and connect to her surrounding landscapes, paying special attention to the way in which the built environment frames every day life. She works professionally as a film editor and cinematographer, and currently teaches 16mm filmmaking at the Mono No Aware workshops in Brooklyn, NY. Amanda has been an assistant professor for undergraduate documentary filmmaking and urban arts courses at New York University's New York and Paris locations.
This project is made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts' Electronic Media and Film Finishing Funds grant program, administered by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes (www.NYSCA.org / www.eARTS.org) as well as from funds from the Austrian Cultural Forum.
