filmmaker's note We all suffer loss and pain in different levels, we intend to hide
and cover our pain, but it won’t go away, instead it’ll add itself
up. The more we tried to hide, the more it would be revealed
in our lives one way or another. How do we go on our lives? I
don’t know the exact answer either, the story is simply
suggesting compassion might be a good way to start. By
helping each other with our wounds, healing and hope might
finally come. John, Elena and Xia are people like us, they differ
each other in every possible social perspective but in their
heart, they’re human, struggling with issues which we’re also
dealing with everyday. Their journey become one. This is a
simple story with complicated souls, souls like ours.
The structure of the film is divided into segments according to
each of the three characters. The parallel narrative intends to
give each character more space and freedom to develop,. The
flashbacks fill in the reality to give better understanding how
the past affects the character’s present action. The performance
is genuine and heartfelt, honest to life, improvisation is even
welcome when the opportunity presents itself.
The film is shot in the mini Arri Alexa with Super 16mm lenses,
which gives the film both a grainy and soft sense of texture.
Harsh on the look but gentle in depth. Handheld operating
enhances the dynamic documentary style and captures the
detail of character’s emotion, action and reaction freely. The
camera operates like the eyes of audience witnessing the
whole journey.
The color palette differ according to the character’s traits and
likes. The lighting is minimal, we used natural light as much as
possible. And the sound effects are realistic, combining them
with simple music notes that fit in dramatic moments during
the film.
