synopsis
Unable to recognize who she has become, a Muslim woman exposes herself to her most intimate thoughts facing a crucial turning point on her journey to self discovery.

director
Sandy Ismail is a Lebanese-American filmmaker born and raised in Queens, New York City. She recently graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a BFA in Film. She has often immersed herself in the art of film, photography and other mediums to express herself. Her most recent short film, Beyond The Veil -- deals with the complexities a young Muslim woman in today's society, is currently making its way through the festival circuit.

filmmaker's note
As an American Muslim woman, the rift between faith and identity is an area that has challenged me throughout life. It has involved confronting the stigmas that society has placed on me as both a woman of color and of the Muslim faith. This project depicts the most intimate parts of a woman who is torn across different cultures. I hope that shedding light to her various dimensions can humanize her complexities as a person. These complexities help create a conscious individual that yearns to understand herself in the confines of her culture and religion. By portraying a veiled woman I offer a deep reflection into her moment of self-awareness. It is a journey we all take in life and I hope the audience can find a piece of themselves in this character.
