An unlikely inter-species courtship.
Denise Iris is a filmmaker and digital media artist whose work playfully transforms everyday situations into heightened moments and imaginary worlds filled with wonder, offering a wry commentary on contemporary life. Hybrids that blur the lines between fiction, documentary, and poetic forms, they range from 1 minute cinematic haikus for smartphones to 1 hour theatrical works.
Denise's films have screened at the Museum of Modern Art in NY, on PBS, and at many festivals at home and abroad. They have won the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Critics' Prize at the Dakino International Film Festival, the Runner Up Prize at A.F.I.'s Visions of U.S. Competition, and a Director's Choice Award at the Black Maria Film Festival. They are in Harvard University's permanent collection.
Denise Iris holds an MFA from Columbia University and a BA from Brown University. She also attended the Centre Odéon d'Etudes Critiques in Paris and the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. She has received grants and fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Jerome Foundation, N.Y. State Council on the Arts, N.Y. Foundation for the Arts, Artslink, Art Matters, and the Experimental TV Center.
Denise has taught at Columbia University and Swarthmore College. Raised in Bucharest, Romania, she lives in New York City.
