synopsis
Filmmaker Jennifer Di Cresce joins controversial author and research scientist Dr. Peter Ferentzy on a cross-country lecture tour advocating for greater compassion toward drug addicts. At first Dr. Ferentzy seems suited to bridge the gap between treatment facilities and it's insular addict population. But Ferentzy's tour soon turns into an unsettling journey through his old wounds and questionable life choices. Is he the wrong guy for the right message? The Adventures of Dr Crackhead is a raw, moving, brutally honest, account of a highly articulate man's attempt to straddle two worlds. The Adventures of Dr Crackhead is a feature length documentary that follows Ferentzy through a tangle of career ambitions, love and dysfunction. His on-again/off-again girlfriend Kathy is a living testament to the dangers of a chronic drug habit, and a beacon for the temptations that would be Ferentzy's undoing. Having Kathy in life his means he is always courting relapse, but like the comic-book heroes he idolized as a child, Ferentzy sees himself as a strong man who should be capable of rescuing the 'damsel in distress'.The Adventures of Dr Crackhead is a raw, moving, brutally honest, account of a highly articulate man's attempt to straddle two worlds. In an adventure that begins in search for social justice, Ferentzy arrives at an emotional truth.

Michael Savoie is an award-winning Canadian Cinematographer who is passionate and committed to the documentary genre. He was invited to join The Journal in the early 1980ís, a CBC innovative news and current affairs and for the next six year he travelled worldwide covering political and social events that included several war zones. He then joined The Fifth Estate, Canadaís premier investigative documentary program and was DP on multi award winning films for PBS such as Born in Africa, Romeo and Juliet in Sarajevo, Murder on Abortion Row as well as To Sell a War a CBC/PBS co-production which won the International Emmy in 1993. More recently he shot the independent feature documentary Claude Jutra - An Unfinished Story and The Many Lives of Raphael Goldchain, the internationally celebrated Canadian photographer. Michaelís focus has now shifted to directing where he can apply his visual ideas and strong story sense. He was Cinematographer on Life and Times - Moe Norman, and in 2010, directed the feature documentary Des McAnuff: a Life in Stages, about the Artistic Director of the Stratford Theatre. In partnership with Jennifer Di Cresce, he completed The Adventures of Dr. Crackhead for the Documentary channel.
After graduating from the University of Waterloo in 1994 with a B.A. in Womenís Studies, Jennifer Di Cresce took on a series of ill-fated jobs. Jennifer returned to film school, hoping to be reunited with her passion for stories and social issues. Quickly after graduation, her old skill sets found a home as a production coordinator/manager for independent documentary production companies. With several productions then under her belt, she partnered with cinematographer Michael Savoie to start Big Twin Productions Inc in 2011. The Adventures of Dr Crackhead is Jenniferís directorial debut and first feature length production acting as a producer.
