synopsis Case is a failed team-building leader whose younger brother, Cameron, is dying from brain cancer. Case is obsessed with trying to design an electronic device to relieve Cameron's suffering, but Case lacks the skills to make the device work. Case meets Nellie, an uptight engineer, on a disastrous blind date. The date is a bust, but Nellie turns out to have the skills necessary to build his device. The two agree to work on the device together, but things become complicated when feelings get in the way. Before Case can help his brother, he will need to come to terms with his own unhappiness.
director Toronto-based filmmaker Rob Shaw grew up in Kitchener, Ontario as a second generation Chinese Canadian. His older brother and sister were his first artistic influences, and they cast him as Luke Skywalker in an audio tape Star Wars parody. Inevitably, this led to Rob getting a degree in film from Ryerson University. Rob finally "found" himself in his forties and directed episodes of children's TV show Big & Small. Unhappy Happy is Rob's first feature film.
