Ellie & Clara is a coming of age story about two childhood friends who rekindle their friendship after several years' separation. They meet for a hike on a small mountain on a brisk and windy day at the end of Autumn. It is a place that evokes poignant memories for Clara, who used to go hiking there with her now deceased father. The natural surroundings and Ellie's closeness compel Clara to reveal a secret that she has kept to herself since the age of fourteen. It has to do with her father and a disturbing incident between them that they never discussed. The uncertain tenderness between the two friends grows into a more solid bond of complicity as a result of sharing this intimate secret.
Farzin Farzaneh is an Iranian-born artist living and working in Montreal. He has practiced painting, drawing and photography for most of his life and is constantly exploring different art-forms and media. He is an accomplished visual artist, having exhibited his paintings, drawings and prints in many galleries in Canada and abroad. He has taught art and filmmaking to students from kindergarten to university levels and continues to explore the ever-expanding panoply of techniques and styles of filmmaking. Ellie & Clara is a truly independent and collective production. The cast and crew worked voluntarily and in perfect harmony out of their sheer enthusiasm for the project. Due to time and climate constraints we were limited to a single day of shooting in early November in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. As luck would have it, the weather turned brutally cold on the day of the shoot; but it somehow worked in our favour. The Autumn landscape was even more magical than before with the new-fallen snow. The original score composed by the very talented Sandra Chechik captures the mood of the film perfectly. I am eternally grateful to everyone involved in the making of this film for believing so deeply in this project and giving it their absolute best. This was the first time that Alina Gotcherian and Sloan-Perry Ambassa were cast in lead roles and they stepped up to the task in spectacular fashion. I believe that Ellie & Clara is a beautiful and moving short film that approaches a difficult subject matter with tenderness, maturity and deep understanding.
