director
Kate Marks began making films after working as a playwright, theatre director, clown, and performer in New York City where The New York Times named her a “superb director” and "ingenious." Additionally Kate has taught Bronx public school students, incarcerated women, seniors with mental illnesses, and disabled adults. Her work with a wide range of students can be felt in her stories, which focus on the need to be witnessed. Kate is a Project Involve fellow at Film Independent where she received the Barbara Boyle Award. Other awards include the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant, The Beutner Family Award for Excellence in the Arts, and a Celtx Seed Award. Her film PEARL WAS HERE premiered at SLAMDANCE to rave reviews and is currently broadcasting on PBS. Her film HOMEBODY received a Juror’s Choice Award at the Black Maria Film + Video Festival and was an opening night film for Curta Cinema. Both films have screened at numerous festivals all over the world. Kate is currently finishing her thesis film MIRACLE MAKER as part of her MFA degree in film directing at CalArts. Kate is a graduate of Brown University where she received honors in playwriting.
