A meditation on urban desolation and existential dread.
While whittling away the hours as an editor for such shows as Dateline, The Today Show, 20/20 and Primetime, Stephen Dackson penned his first feature length screenplay, The Grass Under Ground, exploring the gritty world of a marijuana delivery service and their clientele. He followed that up with a sci-fi script, The Brane Universe, which was a semi-finalist in the 2005 Slamdance Screenplay Competition. Turning his hand to directing, he created an experimental art short, Sequential PAINT, starring acclaimed street artist Gregory Siff, that screened at various galleries in Los Angeles and was a featured selection of the 2010 NewFilmmakers Series at the Anthology Film Archives in NYC. During this time, he also co-wrote the script for Dead Man Running 2, sequel to the hit British action film, and served as script consultant on EA’s Need For Speed: The Run, starring Christina Hendricks. Recently, Indiewire’s The Playlist named Stephen’s script, Octogenarius, Best Unproduced Screenplay of 2012. Starring Harvey Keitel as an 85 year old father out to kill his young son’s girlfriend, the film, which will be directed by Stephen and his partner Andrew Friedman, is currently raising financing through producer Liz Destro, whose recent credits include Lee Daniels’ The Butler. Born and raised in New York City, Stephen studied film at New York University and School of Visual Arts.
