synopsis Nuwebe is inspired by the actual story of one of the youngest mothers in Philippine history. Krista was just 9 years old when she became pregnant. Her mother believes that she was impregnated by malevolent supernatural creatures called "nuno sa punso" but the real story will prove to be more complicated than it seems.
director Joseph Israel Laban is a Tagalog filmmaker and journalist.
He directed, wrote and produced the 2011 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival finalist "Cuchera", which was screened at the Discovery Section of the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. It has since been screened in a number of other festivals including Stockholm, Fribourg, Cleveland and Belgrade. He also directed, wrote and produced, the short film "Antipo" which premiered at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner.
His awards include a Gold World Medal at the 2008 New York Festivals for Television, two Silver World Medals at the 2012 New York Festivals for Television, a Silver Screen Award at the 2008 US International Film and Video Festival, an Ani ng Dangal Award from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and finalist citations at the 2012 PopDev Television Awards and the 2013 CASBAA/ABU UNICEF Child Rights Award.
He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing from the University of the Philippines and a master's degree in documentary filmmaking at New York University on a Fulbright Scholarship.
