Crisalida, which means 'cocoon of an incubating butterfly,' is the name of an 86-year-old woman who watches the world through her bedroom window. Over the course of a Sunday in her small Cuban town, her past and present converge in ironic, unsettling ways.
Alejandro Enmanuel Alonso Estrella, Esther de Rothschild, Rosanna Mendez Gonzalez, Laura Costa Cantal came together in a small Cuban town to capture this story.
Crisalida was made by four directors with six passports- from Cuba, Brazil, France, Spain, the U.S. and the Dominican Republic. We came together in a small Cuban town to capture the story of an unusual woman, our titular character. We were struck by the apparent contradictions of her life, shaken by the ironies of her daily routine. Most of all, though, we were captivated by how she reconciled those dualities into a coherent, meaningful existence. We have taken what we learned from this unforgettable woman back home with us to Sao Paulo, Brooklyn, Guadalajara, and Pinar del Rio, yet we hope to share her story.
