synopsis
SOMEONE ELSE is a surreal drama about the clash of wills between two Korean American cousins. Jamie (Aaron Yoo), a shy young law student hungry for a more vivid, risk-taking existence, visits his wealthy playboy cousin Will (Leonardo Nam) in New York City. Jamie has always looked up to Will for boldly pursuing pleasure and self-gratification in a way that Jamie's own cautious, reserved nature has never dared. In his quest to emulate Will, Jamie sheds his old identity and gets involved with a mysteriously alluring girl named Kat (Jackie Chung). But in a series of surprising twists, Jamie’s adventure spirals out of control, and his dream of self-transformation becomes a nightmare that threatens to destroy him. SOMEONE ELSE takes the audience on a wild, unsettling ride in which nothing is as it first appears. What seems at first to be a realistic drama takes a radical turn beyond realism and transforms into a haunting meditation on love and loss. The true nature of Jamie’s situation is revealed, in an ending that will leave viewers discussing and debating it long after the movie is over.

Filmography

filmmaker's note
SOMEONE ELSE was loosely inspired by Claude Chabrols 1959 film LES COUSINSanother tale of a shy, studious young man who visits his decadent playboy cousin in the big city. When I began writing, I thought it was a story about the conflict between two very different young men: one a dutiful conformist, the other a free spirit; one fearful and insecure, the other bold and self-assured. However, it didnt take long to realize I was really writing about different sides of my own character. Yeats wrote, We make out of the quarrels with others, rhetoric, but of the quarrel with ourselves, poetry. Looking back on my twenties, I saw that there was a quarrel going on inside me that closely mirrored the split between Jamie and Will. I was hardly unique in this; were all different people at different times of the day. (Now that Im in my forties, Im not much concerned about this, but it was the source of some agitation when I was younger.) I hope audiences will see something familiar in Jamies struggle to reconcile his different selves, his quest to exchange one identity for another.
