synopsis Without Wings is a celebration of the human body in motion. The feats of athleticism performed by the dancers, traceurs, and acrobats as they run, jump, leap, soar, flip, and spin through the movements of dance, Parkour, free-running, tricking, and martial arts acrobatics were painstakingly recreated by hand and woven together in a symphony of animated figures. Without Wings rejoices in the amazing ways the human body is able to defy gravity and achieve flight (if only for a moment) without wings.
director Jo Meuris received a BFA in Animation from Concordia University in 1998 and has worked for several years in the Montreal animation industry. Most of her time has been spent at the National Film Board of Canada, where she first worked as an animator and then directed two films of her own (An Aqueous Solution, completed in 2003, and multi-award winning film The Girl Who Hated Books, completed in 2006). In 2006, Jo moved to Los Angeles and received a MFA from UCLA in 2010. Her last film, PK-Granny (completed in 2007), was screened internationally at over fifty festivals and won several awards, including Best Animation at the Beverly Hills Short Film Festival in 2008 and Best Animated Film at the Worldwide Movement Film Festival in 2009. On the rare occasions when Jo is not animating, she can be found training in the discipline of Parkour, taking long walks along the beach, or watching the sunset from the top of the Ferris wheel at Santa Monica Pier.
